Computer Vision Syndrome

For the past few decades, the amount of people that sit in front of a computer, television, or other electronic device on a daily basis has continued to increase. With the increased use of tablets and smart phones, this trend has grown even more over the past five years. While these devices have helped to make us more productive, there have been some unforeseen side effect.

One issue that has occurred is the increased prevalence of Computers Vision Syndrome, which is basically a condition that results in significant discomfort when you spend too much time looking at an electronic screen. If you have had any symptoms that seem to get worse with staring at an electronic screen, it would be helpful to see an optometry professional for eye care. At East Memphis Optometry in Memphis, TN, we provide a variety of treatments to eliminate your symptoms and preserve your vision.

Computers Vision Test and Evaluation

When you go into an optometry practice for an eye care evaluation, you will first receive a full test and evaluation on your situation. Our eye doctor will be able to run a battery of different tests that will evaluation your sensitivity to these electronic lights and how you react. Based on these tests, they will be able to figure out whether you have Computers Vision Syndrome or if there is something else that needs to be considered.

Corrective Lenses and Other Eye Care

If you do have an issue with Computers Vision, our optometrist will look for ways to reduce these symptoms. One of the first things that they will do is provide you with a set of blue light glasses that are designed for use with computers. These will use a different type of filter and glass that can help to reduce the impact of these lights. If this does not work immediately, the optometrist may recommend other eyeglasses or have you go through a vision therapy program that can reduce your sensitivity.

Take Breaks

While you will need to use a computer and other screens on a regular basis, you should still look for ways to reduce your usage. Ideally, you should avoid using these devices when it is not necessary. Even when you do have a long day in front of the computer, you should find ways to take a break every hour.
